Fedora 45 was officially released on November 3, 2026, following two delays. The update introduces a six-month cycle of improvements, including a new console system, enhanced storage management, and stricter security policies for the Linux distribution.
A key technical shift is the replacement of the traditional Linux kernel console with KMSCON. This user-space console system utilizes Kernel Mode Setting to provide graphical display support, moving console functionality out of the kernel for greater flexibility.
The Anaconda installer now supports the Stratis storage system. This allows users to manage local storage pools with features such as snapshots, thin provisioning, and file system management directly during the installation process.
Hardware compatibility has been expanded, with specific improvements for laptops powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon X series processors. This update focuses on refining boot processes, driver support, and overall functionality for ARM-based PCs.
Security updates include restricted default ptrace usage to prevent unauthorized process tracking and mandatory package signature verification. Additionally, Fedora 45 now requires reproducible builds to ensure binary consistency and supply chain transparency.
The release also introduces the DRM Panic frontend, which replaces text-based kernel crash logs with graphical error displays. This feature aims to make system failure information more accessible and easier to diagnose for users.
