Venture capital investment in European defense technology startups reached a record $7.4 billion in 2026, nearly tripling the $2.6 billion raised in 2025. Mega-rounds, including seven deals exceeding $1 billion each, account for over 85 percent of the total funding this year. The sector now represents 11.1 percent of all European venture capital investment, with that figure rising to 15 percent within the EU27.
The investor base is expanding rapidly, with 310 firms participating in at least one deal so far in 2026, a number projected to reach 620 by year-end. US investors now contribute 47 percent of funding for European defense tech, compared to 12 percent in 2020. Germany leads the regional market, with startups there raising $3.5 billion in 2026, while Munich remains the primary hub for defense capital.
Autonomous systems are the primary focus for capital allocation. Drone startups secured $4.7 billion across 40 rounds, while anti-drone and maritime autonomous systems attracted $1.2 billion and $796 million respectively. Despite this growth, Europe faces capability gaps in areas such as AI chips, processors, launch vehicles, and communications satellites compared to global leaders.
Exit activity is accelerating, with projections indicating 28 exits in 2026 across NATO and allied countries, up from an annual average of eight between 2021 and 2024. The combined enterprise value of European venture-backed defense startups has reached $44 billion, doubling over the past year. Notably, 77 percent of this value is attributed to companies founded since 2020.
