The European Commission has formally accused TikTok of violating regional online platform regulations. Regulators claim that the platform's recommendation algorithms create echo chambers and may negatively impact user mental health by repeatedly surfacing content related to sadness, loneliness, or body image.
Despite the implementation of internal controls by TikTok, the Commission stated that preliminary findings show these measures have failed to mitigate the addictive nature of the platform's design. The investigation follows a broader trend of scrutiny under the Digital Services Act, which has already targeted companies like Meta, X, Temu, and AliExpress.
TikTok is now required to modify the design of its For You feed to comply with EU standards. Failure to address these concerns could result in significant financial penalties. The European Commission warned that fines for non-compliance could reach up to 6 percent of the company's total annual global turnover.
