Officials from EU member states are meeting in Brussels to discuss international AI policy and the development of global safety standards. The Artificial Intelligence Board, which coordinates representatives from all member states, is leading the session.

The meeting follows the implementation of the EU AI Act’s enforcement provisions on August 2, 2026. This legislation categorizes AI systems by risk level, imposing strict requirements on high-risk applications and transparency obligations on general-purpose models.

Current enforcement focuses on banned practices, including social scoring and specific biometric surveillance. While some high-risk obligations were deferred to December 2027, the EU is actively promoting its regulatory framework to international partners.

The agenda includes reviewing recent AI incidents and evaluating progress on governance discussions within the G7, G20, and the United Nations. European Commission Executive Vice President Henna Virkkunen recently called for stronger global cooperation on AI oversight.
