The Ethereum Economic Zone (EEZ) is an open-source framework designed to connect decentralized applications across specialized rollups. Co-initiated by Gnosis and Zisk with support from the Ethereum Foundation, the project aims to enable atomic cross-chain execution, allowing contracts on different rollups to interact within a single transaction.

The framework maintains ETH as the default gas token for all participating rollups, avoiding the creation of new tokens. As of October 2026, over 20 rollups held approximately $40 billion in total value locked. The initiative seeks to restore composability across these fragmented ecosystems.

In November 2026, the team launched the Rollup X devnet to demonstrate synchronous composability. Gnosis Chain is scheduled to migrate to an EEZ rollup in spring 2027, serving as the first major network to test the framework under real-world conditions.

The EEZ is governed by a Swiss non-profit organization to ensure infrastructure neutrality. Current project participants include Aave, Safe, and Centrifuge, covering sectors such as lending, smart account infrastructure, and real-world asset tokenization.
