Epic Games is shifting its development strategy to prioritize AI-driven workflows for its upcoming projects. Internal communications indicate that developers will transition from manual coding to managing assets generated by models like Anthropic’s Claude. The company aims to use these tools to increase output and quality across its teams, particularly for those utilizing the Unreal Engine.
The major partnership between Epic Games and Disney, valued at $1.5 billion, faces an indefinite delay. The collaboration, which was initially announced in early 2024, was expected to launch a shooter game featuring Marvel and Star Wars themes in March 2027. Reports cite understaffing and the ongoing internal pivot toward AI-accelerated development as key reasons for the postponement.
CEO Tim Sweeney stated that the company is retooling its operations to maximize the use of AI. This follows a period of significant workforce reduction, including the layoff of over 1,000 employees in March 2025. Epic previously encountered technical issues with AI implementation, such as an incident in May where an AI-voiced Darth Vader character in Fortnite produced inappropriate content.
The broader industry context shows mixed adoption of these technologies. A survey of over 2,300 professionals revealed that while 36 percent of respondents use generative AI, most utilize it for research and brainstorming rather than core coding or prototyping. Despite this, Epic remains committed to integrating AI into nearly all future production processes.
