Foodtech startup Edonia has secured €15 million in a new funding round. The investment was led by SWEN Blue Ocean 2, Asterion Ventures, and EIT Food, with additional support from Bpifrance and bank financing. The company plans to use these funds to scale its industrial production and expand its B2B sales model across Europe, Japan, and the United States.
The company produces Edo, a protein ingredient derived from spirulina. Edonia utilizes a proprietary, patented process called Edonization, developed in collaboration with AgroParisTech. This technology transforms spirulina into a grain-like product that serves as an alternative to meat, cheese, and fish. The startup claims its process results in a carbon footprint up to 27 times lower than traditional meat.
Edonia began industrializing its technology in 2024. The company has already established its own supply chain and fulfilled initial orders for partners, including Aliive and the international group Newrest. Currently, the startup has secured €30 million in pre-orders through approximately twenty contracts signed with various industry players.
The startup intends to open a dedicated facility to increase production capacity. This expansion will leverage a partnership at an existing shared location in France. According to co-founder Hugo Valentin, the new capital will allow the company to transition from pilot-scale operations to verified industrial production for its clients.
