The startup Edonia, founded in 2023, has secured €15 million in a funding round led by SWEN Blue Ocean 2, Asterion Ventures, EIT Food, and Bpifrance. This investment follows a previous €2 million round in 2024. The company plans to use the capital to scale production and expand its reach to food manufacturers and foodservice operators in Europe, Japan, and the US.

Edonia specializes in protein ingredients derived from microalgae using a patented process called Edonization. Its flagship product, Edo, is created by cooking spirulina in oil to achieve a texture similar to minced meat. The ingredient contains 27g of protein per 100g and is marketed as having a carbon footprint up to 27 times lower than beef, while avoiding the extensive additives found in other meat alternatives.

The company has already established a commercial presence, reporting more than €30 million in pre-contracted revenue. In 2025, Edonia partnered with the catering group Newrest to supply ingredients for thousands of meals monthly in France. Additionally, the brand Dietbon has integrated Edo into its ready-meal range, where 40% of customers opted for the plant-based version over meat.

The funding for Edonia is part of a broader trend in the European B2B food-tech sector. In 2026, other companies such as Verley, Standing Ovation, Planetary, MAASH, Vivici, and Pacifico Biolabs also secured significant capital. Collectively, these recent announcements represent approximately €142 million in total funding for the industry.
