The European Central Bank has initiated a recruitment process for online merchants to participate in a 12-month digital euro pilot program. Applications opened on September 15 and will close on October 27, with the operational phase scheduled to commence in the second half of 2027.
The pilot program already includes 36 selected payment service providers, chosen from over 50 applicants in July. These participants represent both banks and nonbank entities across the euro area. Their responsibilities include developing payment services, connecting to the digital euro platform, and completing user testing.
Participating merchants will collaborate with acquiring payment service providers to implement checkout flows for eligible users. The pilot aims to test the integration of a beta digital euro into existing commercial payment infrastructure, assessing whether current systems are sufficient or if additional technical work is required.
For U.S. payments firms and merchants operating in Europe, this initiative serves as a practical case study for central bank digital currency implementation. While the European Central Bank has not yet made a final decision on issuing a digital euro, the pilot provides data on how a retail CBDC might function within established payment ecosystems.
