A resident of Jiaxing, Zhejiang province, has filed a lawsuit against the developer of the AI application Doubao. The plaintiff, identified as Mr. Shi, claims that conflicting information provided by the service regarding a burial date led to family conflicts and personal distress.
Following his mother's death on April 17, Mr. Shi used the AI to select a burial date, which the system suggested as April 19. Upon further inquiry, the AI provided contradictory information, suggesting the date was not auspicious. Despite this, the burial proceeded as planned because relatives had already been notified.
After the funeral, a relative was involved in a serious traffic accident. Family members blamed the incident on the burial date, claiming it violated traditional customs. Mr. Shi, a regular user of Doubao for document management, sought compensation and an apology from the company after his initial complaint went unanswered.
The AI platform's user agreement states that generated content is for reference only and does not constitute professional advice. It specifies that users are responsible for decisions made based on AI output. Legal experts note that proving a direct causal link between the AI's response and the alleged damages will be difficult for the plaintiff.
