Danske Bank has reduced its headcount by over 680 positions in early 2026, including 420 cuts in February and 262 in May. The bank currently employs approximately 19,472 people and attributes these staff reductions to efficiency gains from digital tools and artificial intelligence.

The organization has increased its annual technology budget to DKK 4,5 billion. Under the Forward '28 strategy, the bank aims to achieve DKK 2 billion in annual productivity gains from AI by 2028. Key financial targets include a cost-to-income ratio of 43% and a return on equity exceeding 14,5%.

Technological initiatives include a completed AI-agent payment pilot with Mastercard and an expanded partnership with Amazon Web Services using the Bedrock platform. Frans Woelders, head of technology and services, noted that AI integration will impact operations across the entire business.

A September 2026 report from Danmarks Nationalbank indicates that companies implementing AI are slowing down new hiring. The analysis suggests that younger and highly educated workers are experiencing the most significant impact on employment opportunities within the knowledge economy.
