A US federal judge has ruled that OpenAI cannot access the confidential settlement agreement between Apple and SpaceXAI. This decision ensures that the details of the out-of-court deal remain private, effectively removing Apple from the ongoing antitrust litigation initiated by Elon Musk's companies.
The legal dispute began when SpaceXAI and X accused Apple and OpenAI of colluding to stifle competition in generative AI and smartphone ecosystems. The plaintiffs alleged that Apple provided preferential treatment to ChatGPT, which hindered the growth of competing products like Grok.
SpaceXAI later withdrew its lawsuit against Apple while continuing its legal action against OpenAI. OpenAI subsequently requested access to the settlement documents, arguing they might contain information relevant to the remaining case. The court reviewed the agreement in private and rejected the request.
The presiding judge concluded that the settlement terms have no substantive connection to the issues OpenAI is currently facing. The court emphasized that maintaining confidentiality is essential to encourage parties to settle disputes, and there was no evidence that the agreement contained information critical to the trial.
