Coinbase has introduced Coinbase for Agents, a financial infrastructure layer designed to allow autonomous AI agents to conduct trades, lending, borrowing, and payments independently. The service, which launched between June 11 and June 16, 2026, enables agents to manage financial tasks without human intervention.
The platform supports the x402 protocol, which facilitates machine-to-machine micropayments in USDC without requiring API keys or subscriptions. According to the company, this protocol has already processed more than 180 million transactions. By September 2026, the service expanded to include equities and ETFs.
The product is built upon AgentKit, a framework developed by Coinbase in 2024 to integrate AI agents with blockchain financial systems. Organizations can utilize team agent accounts to manage multiple autonomous entities under shared controls.
Alongside the launch, Coinbase introduced an SEC-registered AI advisor, Coinbase Advisor. This registration is intended to provide regulatory guardrails for the advisory functions, reflecting the company's strategy to integrate compliance into its infrastructure for the emerging agentic economy.
