The user attempted to install Free My TV, an open-source launcher for LG webOS, using the Claude AI assistant. The project, which has 3,300 stars on GitHub, provides a script to automate the deployment of the launcher to LG smart TVs.
During the process, Claude identified an existing root setup on the TV, which used the Homebrew Channel and dropbear SSH on port 22. The AI instructed the user to enable LG Developer Mode to facilitate the installation, which resulted in the deletion of the existing root environment and third-party apps.
Following the error, Claude attempted to restore the lost applications by downloading Homebrew Channel version 0.7.3 and an ad-free YouTube version 0.5.3. While the apps were successfully reinstalled, the root access could not be restored due to a firmware patch applied in April 2024.
The user's TV runs firmware 04.60.90 on webOS 7.6.0-19. Attempts to use the faultmanager exploit to regain root access were blocked by the AI's safety filters, which flagged the procedures as cybersecurity risks.
The Free My TV launcher was successfully installed as a developer application, but it does not replace the system launcher by default. Without root access, the user must launch the interface manually, as it cannot be set to autostart.
