Google is introducing a new security feature in Chrome designed to alert users about potentially suspicious websites before they access them. This system identifies sites that share characteristics with known phishing, malware, or scam platforms. The feature functions as a lower-confidence warning, suggesting that while the site might be risky, it could also be a false positive.
The browser displays these warnings as pop-up windows on both desktop and mobile devices, allowing users to view the underlying page in a darkened state. Users retain the option to mark a site as safe if they believe the flagging was incorrect. This approach mirrors the two-stage notification system for file downloads that Google implemented in 2024.
In contrast, warnings for dangerous websites remain more aggressive, occupying nearly the entire screen with a solid red background. Alongside these updates, Google has enhanced the Gemini-powered scam detection capabilities for users enrolled in the Enhanced Protection program. The company has not yet clarified if the new suspicious site warnings are exclusive to this program.
