Chinese state media recently criticized proposals from Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei regarding the regulation of AI development. According to a report in China Daily, these initiatives are viewed as a strategic attempt to limit China's technological progress and maintain investor interest in American AI companies.
The publication argues that efforts to restrict access to advanced Nvidia chips and allegations of illegal model distillation have not hindered Chinese progress. It highlights the performance of the DeepSeek and Kimi K3 models, which are noted for being significantly more cost-effective than frontier models like Fable 5.1 or GPT 5.6 Sol.
The report suggests that the current focus on excluding China from global AI-safety frameworks is intended to widen the technological gap between the two nations. It characterizes the U.S. approach as treating AI development as a zero-sum game, which complicates international cooperation on safety.
Despite these tensions, Chinese authorities acknowledge the potential risks associated with AI. The Standardization Administration of China and the Cyberspace Administration of China have stated that AI development requires monitoring to ensure it remains under human control.
China Daily advocates for increased bilateral dialogue and high-level exchanges between the U.S. and China. The publication emphasizes that AI should serve the common good rather than being used for geopolitical maneuvering or personal financial gain.
