The Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has issued a notice proposing stricter safety regulations for vehicle interior technologies. The potential rules target large infotainment screens, head-up displays, and other digital interfaces, which may now require mandatory assessments for driver safety, crash performance, and reliability under extreme conditions.
Regulators are considering a ban on flexible and folding displays in production vehicles. Additionally, the proposal suggests prohibiting the use of 'zero gravity' seats while a car is in motion and restricting LED daytime running lights that allow for user-generated designs. The use of voice commands for critical safety functions, such as headlight and door operation, may also be restricted.
If the proposed regulations are approved, they will apply to all vehicles manufactured starting January 1, 2027. Existing vehicles on the market will be required to comply with the new standards by July 1, 2027. According to reports, non-compliant models will face mandatory recalls or removal from production lines.
