Research from Epoch AI indicates that ChatGPT usage patterns among 5,000 US users intensified between 2022 and 2025. Participants in the study increased both the frequency of their sessions and the average length of their messages during this period.

A separate survey conducted by Epoch AI in December 2025 involving 5,660 Americans revealed that 35% of respondents used ChatGPT weekly. In comparison, 24% reported using Google Gemini, while 13% utilized Meta AI.

Monetization remains a challenge for the sector, as fewer than 10% of users pay for AI subscriptions. OpenAI holds a 4.6% share of the paid subscription market. Internal data from OpenAI shows that users send 50% more messages six months after registration.

The platform's weekly active user base grew from approximately 500 million in March 2025 to an estimated 700 million to 800 million by the end of the year. Epoch AI continues to track these engagement metrics through its dedicated dataset.
