OpenAI has introduced a new locking feature for ChatGPT, allowing users to secure individual chat threads. Access to these locked conversations can be restricted using a PIN code, Face ID, or Touch ID, providing an extra layer of privacy when sharing a device with others.

Locked chats are moved to a dedicated section within the 'Projects' tab, separating them from the main history, pinned chats, and search results. Unlike temporary chats, these threads are saved and can be accessed repeatedly, though the feature does not implement end-to-end encryption or change data storage policies.

If the 'Memory' feature is active, locked chats utilize a separate memory space distinct from the main ChatGPT history. New messages within these threads update this isolated memory area only. Users should note that resetting the PIN code results in the permanent deletion of all associated locked chats and files.

The feature is currently being rolled out gradually to all users, including those on free plans. However, it is not available for temporary, archived, or group chats, nor for threads created via shared links or those containing scheduled tasks and meeting records. It is also excluded from the healthcare version of ChatGPT.
