OpenAI launched a new ChatGPT add-in for Microsoft Word on September 17, 2026. The tool functions as a sidebar within the application, allowing users to draft, edit, summarize, and format documents without leaving the interface. It is available for installation via the Microsoft Marketplace.
The add-in is accessible to all ChatGPT users, including those on free-tier plans, and does not require a separate Copilot license. While it offers broad access to AI writing tools, some organizations may require administrative approval for deployment.
This integration is distinct from Microsoft Copilot, which is designed for enterprise-level workflows and data integration. The new tool targets individual creators, students, and freelancers who seek AI assistance without enterprise overhead.
Beyond Word, the ChatGPT integration is also available for Excel and PowerPoint. This release marks a shift in the partnership between Microsoft and OpenAI, which began in 2019, as the ChatGPT brand is now directly integrated into the Microsoft Office suite.
