The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has launched the Frontier Forum Series, a set of public roundtables focused on financial technology. The first session is scheduled for October 28, 2026, and will address artificial intelligence, with future discussions planned for crypto assets and prediction markets.
The agency’s Innovation Task Force, established on March 24, 2026, under Chairman Michael S. Selig, leads the initiative. The group is coordinated by senior advisor Michael J. Passalacqua and aims to develop regulatory frameworks for US derivatives markets to keep pace with technological advancements.
The CFTC is currently exploring the creation of a derivatives market for computing power. The agency has issued a request for comment on how to treat processing capacity as a commodity, allowing participants to hedge against price volatility in a manner similar to energy markets.
To address regulatory challenges, the Task Force is collaborating with the SEC’s Crypto Task Force. This coordination aims to reduce jurisdictional ambiguity for companies operating in digital asset markets and to position the United States as a hub for financial innovation.
