CATL has officially introduced its Dual-Electric Range Extender technology, designed to enhance the efficiency of heavy-duty electric trucks. The system enables deep discharge of the primary battery down to 5% state of charge, switching to a range-extender pack when necessary. This setup is intended to match the operational performance of diesel vehicles while reducing the total cost of ownership.

The company estimates that the new system can save users more than ¥460 000, or approximately $68 700, over a three-year operational cycle. To support the technology, CATL is expanding its QiJi battery-swapping network, which features standardized battery blocks in two sizes: the 260# model with 432 kWh capacity and the 300# model with 513 kWh capacity.

Currently, over 430 000 electric heavy trucks utilize CATL batteries, accounting for more than 70% of the global market. In China, the penetration rate of electric heavy trucks rose from 5.2% in 2022 to 50.28% in September 2026. CATL notes that the industry has shifted into an electric-versus-electric competitive phase.

During the launch event, CATL signed agreements with 14 partners, including SF Express, ZTO Express, and YTO Express. These partnerships include an initial order volume of 13 000 units. Additionally, the company unveiled four specialized Tectrans II products to cater to specific operational requirements within the heavy-duty transport sector.
