Canva has launched Craft, a new two-stage AI model designed to compete with solutions from OpenAI, Microsoft, and Google. The system first plans the design layout before generating the final image, which the company claims improves accuracy and user control.
The model supports 2K resolution and over 30 aspect ratios, making it suitable for social media and marketing content. It was trained on millions of human-created templates from the Canva library, including presentations and infographics.
Canva Craft currently ranks fourth on the Design Arena benchmark, trailing three models from OpenAI. The platform has integrated safety features, including moderation tools for inputs and outputs, as well as privacy controls.
Users can access the tool globally via the Dream Lab feature in the Canva interface. Future updates will include support for AI agents via the MCP protocol, along with the release of faster versions named Craft-fast and Craft-ultrafast.
