The new energy storage facility in Williamsdale, south of Tuggeranong, is now operational. It features 136 Tesla Megapack 2 units with a total capacity of 250 MW. During peak demand, the system can supply electricity to approximately one-third of Canberra for two hours.
The project is managed by the private firm Eku Energy, which handled development, construction, and ongoing operations. The facility was originally scheduled for completion in 2025, but the launch was delayed until late 2026 following a shift in the timeline to early 2026.
Under a 15-year agreement, the ACT government will pay Eku Energy AUD 368 million. In return, the region is entitled to 50% of the net revenue generated from electricity sales. Chief Minister Andrew Barr expects the project to become profitable as revenue is projected to exceed support costs.
The storage system integrates with the regional power grid to balance supply and demand by storing excess energy during low-usage periods. It is intended to support critical infrastructure, including hospitals, universities, data centers, residential areas, and local businesses.
