ByteDance is expanding its short-drama business internationally with the PineDrama platform. The service operates independently under the TikTok division and has reached the top 10 on iPhone free-app charts in the US, Brazil, and Thailand.

Unlike competitors such as ReelShort and DramaBox that use paid models, PineDrama utilizes a free-to-watch strategy monetized through advertising. The platform leverages TikTok traffic to lower user acquisition costs compared to rivals relying on third-party platforms.

The company utilizes its existing content ecosystem, including IP from the Tomato Novel platform. Producers report that 70% to 80% of IP for AI-animated dramas comes from this library, which helps reduce uncertainty in content selection.

ByteDance provides a tiered authorization system for creators, allowing them to license existing IP or distribute original scripts. This infrastructure aims to create a closed loop for production and distribution as more Chinese teams shift focus to overseas markets.
