ByteDance currently utilizes approximately 20% of all operational data center capacity in China. The company acts as the largest tenant in the country, driving infrastructure development for its AI products, including the Doubao assistant and the Seedance video generator.

According to SemiAnalysis, the total operational capacity of Chinese data centers exceeds 24 GW. An additional 20 GW of capacity is currently under development, with another 30 GW in the planning stages. In contrast, US data center capacity is projected to reach 56 GW by the end of 2026.

Public competitors including Alibaba, Tencent, and Baidu reported combined capital expenditures of $20 billion in the second quarter of 2026, doubling their year-over-year spending. All three companies recorded negative free cash flow during the same period.

A shortage of AI chips has slowed the adoption of new data center space in China. During the first half of 2026, the country added 595 Eflops of computing power, down from 802 Eflops in the second half of 2025. Total AI computing power reached 2185 Eflops by June 2026.
