BYD is initiating a recall of 183,211 vehicles in China due to a defect in the brake pedal stopper. The issue, caused by manufacturing material abnormalities, may lead to the stopper cracking or detaching after prolonged use. This malfunction can cause brake lights to remain illuminated even when the pedal is not engaged, potentially misleading other drivers and creating safety risks.
The recall affects Tang and Qin series models produced between 2014 and 2022. Specifically, the Tang series accounts for 142,895 units, including the standard Tang, Tang DM, and Tang EV models. The Qin series involves 40,316 vehicles. Authorized dealers will replace the faulty components with improved parts at no cost to owners. Vehicles already equipped with updated stoppers are excluded.
The Tang series recall includes 58,026 units built from March 28, 2015, to December 21, 2018; 77,846 Tang DM vehicles from May 19, 2018, to January 14, 2022; and 7,023 Tang EV units from December 27, 2018, to October 25, 2021. The affected Qin vehicles were manufactured between June 27, 2014, and June 9, 2019. The State Administration for Market Regulation issued the notice on Friday.
In the first eight months of the year, Tang series sales reached 67,278 units, a 34.96% decline compared to the previous year. Qin series sales dropped 52.88% to 184,117 vehicles during the same period. Despite these specific model declines, BYD reported a total of 440,293 new energy vehicle sales in August, representing a 17.84% year-on-year increase and the company's highest monthly total for the year.
