Denis Migal, head of the EMM team at Magnit Tech, developed a custom UDP proxy for LwM2M services using Rust, despite having no prior experience with the language. The proxy was required to maintain DTLS session persistence across Kubernetes pods, a task that standard UDP load balancers could not perform.
The development process involved using AI models to generate code, debug errors, and refine the architecture. The author implemented a six-level testing strategy, including unit tests, Python-based client-side checks, and verification of build artifacts to ensure security compliance, such as correct file permissions for PKCS#12 keys.
During load testing in Yandex Cloud, the proxy handled an average of 184 405 packets per second across three replicas with no recorded I/O errors or packet loss. The test was capped by the load generator's limits rather than the proxy's capacity, confirming the component's scalability for infrastructure needs.
The project highlighted the importance of independent validation, as the author found that AI-generated solutions required human oversight for architectural decisions and rigorous testing. The author emphasizes that while AI effectively handles routine tasks like code edits and log collection, the responsibility for release readiness remains with the developer.
