The author developed a custom Home Assistant dashboard featuring an interactive, hand-drawn floor plan of their home. The interface replaces standard menus with a visual representation where device states are reflected through animations and lighting changes.
The project required collaboration with an environment artist to create day and night versions of the floor plan. All assets were exported on a unified canvas to ensure precise alignment, with static images used for inactive devices and looped WebP animations for active ones.
Technically, the dashboard relies on the picture-elements card in Home Assistant. Conditional elements manage the switching between day and night modes, while state_image properties trigger specific animations based on device status, such as air conditioning operation.
To display the dashboard on a television, the author bypassed the native webOS browser limitations by connecting a dedicated Home Assistant device directly via HDMI. This setup uses the HAOS Kiosk Display add-on to maintain a persistent, full-screen interface.
The final dashboard includes individual views for each floor and a comprehensive 'Full' view. By utilizing a consistent coordinate system across all images, the author successfully implemented an exploded view layout that displays both floors and the garden simultaneously.
