BMW is introducing a new feature called BMW Maps with Driver Assistance, which merges navigation data and active-safety visuals into a single 3D display. This integration aims to provide drivers with a clearer understanding of vehicle maneuvers, such as automated lane changes, by showing them directly within the route map.
The system was developed in partnership with Mapbox and is scheduled to launch on vehicles running BMW Operating System X starting in October 2026. The Neue Klasse models, including the iX3, are expected to be the first to receive this software architecture, which supports the unified panoramic display required for the feature.
The technology supports hands-free driving on highways at speeds up to 130 km/h. It allows for automated lane changes confirmed by a driver's glance, replacing the need for manual steering input. This update is part of the company's broader strategy to advance highly automated driving through the interaction of navigation and assistance systems.
While BMW plans to expand these capabilities into more complex environments like urban traffic, the rollout remains subject to local regulations, road mapping coverage, and type-approval decisions in individual markets. The company has not yet released a comprehensive list of all qualifying vehicle models.
