The BMW plant in Regensburg has reached a production milestone of 9 million vehicles since its opening in 1986. The nine-millionth unit, an iX1 crossover finished in Velvet Orchid II Metallic, was manufactured in September 2026 to meet the specific requirements of a customer in Sweden.
The facility currently serves as the highest-volume BMW factory in Europe. In 2025, the plant produced approximately 356,000 vehicles, maintaining a pace where a new car was completed every 57 seconds. Operations currently span three shifts with a total workforce of about 9,000 employees across Regensburg and Wackersdorf.
The plant demonstrates significant manufacturing flexibility by assembling gasoline, plug-in hybrid, and fully electric versions of the X1 and X2 models on a single production line. This integrated approach allowed the factory to produce over 150,000 electrified vehicles in 2025 without interrupting the output of combustion-engine cars.
The site began operations in 1986 with the E30 3 Series, initially targeting a daily output of 400 vehicles and 3,500 jobs. By the end of 2025, the cumulative production reached 8.7 million units, leading to the 9 million milestone achieved during the plant's 40th year of operation.
