BMW has updated the projected EPA range for its upcoming iX5 60 xDrive electric SUV. During the recent X5 series launch event, product manager John Kelly announced that the vehicle is now expected to achieve approximately 724 kilometers, or 450 miles, on a single charge. This figure represents an increase from the 700-kilometer estimate provided by the company earlier this summer.
The vehicle features a 144kWh battery pack, which is the largest capacity ever used in a BMW production model. To achieve this, the company utilized 46120 cylindrical cells, which are 25mm taller than the 4695 cells found in the iX3 and i3 models. Project manager Michael Aures noted that the company views 644 kilometers as the threshold for range anxiety, with the additional capacity providing a buffer for high-speed driving and climate control usage.
In terms of charging performance, the iX5 supports power levels up to 460kW. This capability allows the battery to charge from 10% to 80% in 22 minutes. The company plans to bring the new electric SUV to market in the first quarter of 2027.
