AWS CEO Matt Garman warned that the US risks losing its lead in the AI race due to widespread opposition to data center construction. In the second quarter of 2026 alone, projects valued at $68 billion were blocked. Currently, there are 100 proposed moratoriums on data center development across the country.
Garman addressed concerns regarding resource consumption, stating that data centers use minimal water compared to other industries. He also challenged claims that these facilities drive up electricity costs, arguing that private sector investment in power infrastructure will eventually lead to stable or lower energy rates for local residents.
To support local communities, Amazon has pledged to invest more than $1 billion over the next five years through its Built Together initiative. This funding will focus on education, job training, and energy preservation. The company previously contributed over $1 billion to various US communities.
Amazon highlighted its economic contributions, including an estimated $3 billion in tax revenue for St. Joseph County, Indiana, and the creation of thousands of jobs. The company also noted that its education programs currently serve more than 10,000 participants.
