Emin Gün Sirer, founder and CEO of Ava Labs, stated on October 9, 2026, that AI poses a greater risk to software, libraries, and wallets than to the ECDSA signature scheme. He emphasized that vulnerabilities in code are a more immediate concern for the blockchain ecosystem.
Despite this, Ava Labs is evaluating a proposal from Haseeb Qureshi for a cryptographic recovery mode. This concept involves an alternative cryptosystem that could be integrated into the Avalanche blockchain to protect users if the primary signature scheme fails.
Additionally, an internal team at Ava Labs is researching hash-based security approaches. These methods rely on hash functions rather than elliptic curve mathematics, providing a potential layer of protection against future AI-driven threats.
Sirer confirmed that there are no confirmed exploits at this time and no immediate changes are planned for the Avalanche protocol. No specific timeline or technical implementation details for these potential upgrades have been disclosed.
