The Australian government is preparing to introduce the Digital Duty of Care bill this week. The proposed legislation aims to grant users the ability to disable recommendation algorithms on social media platforms.

Minister for Communications Anika Wells stated that the law will establish fundamental regulations for the social media industry. Companies including Meta, Google, and TikTok will face significant financial penalties if they fail to provide users with an option to turn off these algorithms.

The government is currently consulting with experts to determine whether the feature should be an opt-in or opt-out mechanism. Minister Wells emphasized that while many users appreciate the convenience of algorithms for entertainment or local discovery, tech giants must respect user autonomy.

The legislative proposal has already encountered opposition. Angus Taylor, leader of the Liberal Party, expressed skepticism regarding the government's decision. The debate continues as the administration seeks to balance user control with the existing functionality of digital platforms.
