Applied Materials has officially opened its EPIC Center in Sunnyvale, California. The facility represents a $5 billion investment, which the company describes as the largest commitment to advanced semiconductor research and development in the United States.

The center spans 600,000 square feet, including nearly four acres of cleanroom space. The primary objective is to accelerate semiconductor development cycles by at least 30% by enabling parallel collaboration between chipmakers, equipment manufacturers, and academic researchers.

Founding partners of the initiative include major industry players such as TSMC, Intel, SK hynix, Micron, and Samsung Electronics, with Broadcom participating as an innovation partner. Academic involvement includes Stanford and UC Berkeley.

The facility focuses on developing technologies three to four generations ahead of current production standards. This initiative is driven by the increasing demand for high-performance chips required for AI workloads, which necessitate more integrated development processes.
