Apple has introduced 5G RedCap technology in the cellular versions of the Apple Watch Series 12. According to the official technical specifications, the A3586 and A3588 models are specifically listed as supporting RedCap for both 5G and LTE networks.

RedCap, which stands for Reduced Capability, is a lightweight 5G specification tailored for compact devices. By reducing baseband bandwidth, antenna count, and peak transmission rates compared to standard smartphone 5G modules, the technology helps save internal space and lowers power consumption to extend battery life.

The device supports 14 FDD and 3 TDD 5G NR frequency bands, alongside 23 LTE bands, enabling international roaming capabilities. Despite these hardware adjustments, the watch retains full functionality, including voice calls, messaging, streaming, map navigation, and notification management.

The decision to utilize RedCap instead of full-scale 5G is based on the device's dependency on the iPhone. Since the smartphone handles intensive tasks such as initial setup, application installation, and heavy data processing, the RedCap specification is sufficient to meet the operational requirements of the wearable.
