Apple executives, including CEO John Ternus, have detailed the design philosophy behind the upcoming iPhone Duo, the company's first foldable device. The design team drew inspiration from paper notebooks, aiming to balance a larger display area with portability while maintaining a familiar user experience.
The device features proportions inspired by the A-series paper standard, with an unfolded state similar to A5 paper. Internally, the product is often compared to the size of a passport when folded. The hardware includes a custom variable-torque hinge system designed to ensure a smooth opening motion and a flat screen surface when fully extended.
Software design for the iPhone Duo focuses on continuity, integrating interface elements from iPad, Mac, and iPhone. Apple's VP of Human Interface Design, Steve Lemay, stated that the goal is to provide a consistent experience across both folded and unfolded states without requiring users to learn new interaction logic.
Apple emphasizes that the iPhone Duo is not merely a hardware exercise but a strategic effort to redefine mobile device usage. The development process involved close collaboration between hardware and software teams to ensure that the increased screen space feels like a natural extension of existing mobile workflows.
The company has officially scheduled the pre-order date for the iPhone Duo for October 16, 2026. This launch marks Apple's entry into the competitive foldable market, positioning the device as a tool that combines productivity with the convenience of a compact, pocketable form factor.
