Apple is focusing on the durability of its latest hardware, highlighting advancements in display technology and structural design. The second-generation Ceramic Shield, introduced with the iPhone 17 series and featured on the iPhone 18 Pro, offers three times the scratch resistance of its predecessor. This material remains a key component in the company's efforts to improve long-term device reliability.
The upcoming iPhone Duo, scheduled for release next month, includes an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance. Tom Maliboo, the new Vice President of Hardware Engineering, emphasized the durability of the device's hinge mechanism. Maliboo succeeded John Ternus, who now serves as the company's CEO, and is overseeing the integration of these protective features across the product lineup.
During a recent interview at the London headquarters, Maliboo addressed the company's design philosophy regarding screen protection. He expressed a personal dislike for third-party screen protectors, noting that Apple invests significant resources into creating durable, scratch-resistant coatings. The engineering team aims to balance resistance against sharp objects with long-term wear protection.
