Apple is reportedly exploring the integration of Nvidia NVLink Fusion technology into its upcoming Baltra server processors. These chips are being developed in collaboration with Broadcom and are intended for the company's internal server infrastructure. The NVLink Fusion interface, which Nvidia opened to third-party developers earlier this spring, facilitates the connection of external components with Nvidia hardware.
The adoption of this technology suggests that Apple may be planning to re-enter the enterprise hardware market by offering its processors or server racks to external clients. By utilizing NVLink Fusion, Apple would enable its customers to integrate these server solutions with Nvidia accelerators. This move would mark a significant shift for the company, which has not participated in the enterprise hardware sector since 2011.
The Baltra processors are based on the architecture powering the future M8 chip series. According to current reports, the manufacturing process will be handled by TSMC using 3 nm technology nodes. While Apple has historically focused on consumer devices, these developments indicate a strategic expansion toward high-performance computing and server-grade hardware solutions for third-party enterprises.
