Apple is evaluating the development of a new rack-mount server line aimed at external customers, including enterprises, developers, and government agencies. This initiative marks a potential return to the standard server market, which the company exited in 2010 after discontinuing its Xserve product line.

The proposed hardware architecture reportedly features configurations with two or four M8 Ultra processors. As the M8 Ultra chip is currently in the early stages of development, the project remains in the preliminary planning phase with a potential market launch expected around 2029.

A key technical aspect under consideration is the integration of Nvidia's NVLink Fusion technology. This high-bandwidth, low-latency interconnect would allow Apple's server platform to interface with Nvidia's data center ecosystem, facilitating improved data exchange and computational synergy for AI infrastructure.

By exploring this server project, Apple aims to address the rising demand for high-performance computing and AI model training. The move reflects a broader strategic interest in the enterprise hardware sector, potentially leveraging both proprietary silicon and third-party interconnect standards.
