Apple support representatives recently addressed a viral video where a blogger removed the inner screen layer of an iPhone Duo. The company clarified that this component is a specialized nano-texture protective layer, not a standard screen protector. It is designed to reduce glare, improve the visual appearance of screen creases, and provide durability for the foldable display.
The layer consists of a custom polymer with 40 percent higher rigidity than industry-standard materials. Apple hardware engineering VP Kate Bergeron noted that while the layer is engineered for durability, creases may become more pronounced over time, allowing users to opt for a replacement. The company strongly advises against unauthorized removal or replacement with third-party films.
Official repair costs for the nano-texture layer are set at ¥398. If a user damages the inner screen during an unauthorized attempt to remove the layer, the out-of-warranty repair cost rises to ¥7998. With an active AppleCare+ plan, the inner screen repair is reduced to ¥628, while re-applying the matte coating costs ¥139.
