Anthropic has signed its first content licensing agreement with a news publisher, partnering with the Associated Press. The deal allows the Claude chatbot to display real-time election results from the agency during the US midterm election night, provided the source is cited.
Financial terms and the duration of the contract remain undisclosed. Previously, Anthropic maintained that scraping web content for its AI models fell under the principle of fair use. However, the company faced pressure as publishers began blocking its web crawlers to restrict access to their data.
This move marks a shift in strategy for Anthropic, which had previously avoided such licensing deals. In contrast, its competitor OpenAI has already secured partnerships with over a dozen media organizations, including News Corp, Axel Springer, and The Atlantic.
The Associated Press has also established similar licensing arrangements with Google and OpenAI. By securing this deal, Anthropic aims to address limitations in Claude's ability to provide timely information, which had been hindered by the lack of access to current news content.
