Anthropic has released an analysis modeling the impact of artificial intelligence on the US economy by 2030. The study outlines three distinct scenarios based on varying speeds of AI adoption and deployment, utilizing usage data from the company's Claude models.
The most aggressive scenario projects a 32.4% increase in GDP, reaching $44.4 trillion. This forecast assumes the rapid deployment of self-improving AI systems that automate the majority of knowledge work across all economic sectors.
The substantial scenario estimates an 8.3% GDP growth to $36.3 trillion, while the modest scenario predicts a 1.6% increase to $34.1 trillion. The model anticipates that significant growth will begin after 2027, when AI diffusion reaches critical mass.
Surveyed respondents largely favor the substantial scenario, with most expecting a 10% GDP uplift and an unemployment rate near 5%. Only 10% of those surveyed support the aggressive 32.4% growth projection.
The variance between the scenarios depends on the speed of AI system improvements, the rate of business adoption, and the adaptability of institutions and workers. The consensus view suggests that AI-driven job creation will offset automation-related losses through 2030.
