According to a report by SemiAnalysis published in early October 2026, the inference business of Anthropic could reach margins of up to 88% after accounting for compute costs. The company's financial model relies heavily on API services, which generate 75–85% of its annual recurring revenue. Margins for these API services are estimated to exceed 80%.
Consumer subscriptions account for approximately 10% of revenue while utilizing over 40% of inference compute. Despite this, these subscriptions maintain compute margins of about 50%. Subscription users receive more than four times the compute per dollar compared to API customers, and on specific workloads, they may obtain up to five times the value offered by OpenAI.
Anthropic reported negative 94% gross margins in 2024. By mid-2026, these figures improved to the mid-60% range, driven by optimizations in inference operations. Previous projections indicated the company was on track to achieve more than $1 billion in quarterly operating profit by the third quarter of 2026.
The analysis notes that subscriptions reduce blended revenue per megawatt by roughly $36 million. However, the company remains profitable on a gross-margin basis under realistic conditions. Analysts suggest Anthropic may achieve sustained profitability faster than competitors due to its API-first approach, contrasting with the free-user model utilized by OpenAI.
