Amazon intends to begin selling its proprietary Trainium AI chips to external customers outside of Amazon Web Services by late 2027. The company is currently engaged in discussions with potential buyers, which were ongoing as of mid-2026.

The decision follows high demand for the hardware, which has outpaced current AWS capacity. Amazon reports that Trainium supply is largely committed through AWS for 2026, 2027, and parts of 2028, with over $225 billion in revenue commitments from firms including OpenAI and Anthropic.

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy previously projected that the company's chip segment, which includes both Trainium and Graviton processors, could generate over $20 billion in annual revenue by 2026.

To compete with Nvidia, Amazon is focusing on software compatibility. In October 2026, the company open-sourced TorchNeuron, a tool designed to allow developers to migrate PyTorch code to Trainium chips with minimal modifications.

Technical performance data indicates that Trainium3 offers a 30–40% improvement in price-performance compared to Trainium2, which was approximately 30% more efficient than existing GPUs.
