Amazon has officially joined the industry-wide discussion regarding the pace of artificial intelligence development. The company stated that AI models must undergo rigorous testing and meet strict safety standards before they are released to the public.
Company spokesperson Tom Parnell emphasized that progress and safety are not mutually exclusive goals. Amazon believes that the industry must collaborate with governments to establish comprehensive protective measures to mitigate potential risks associated with new technologies.
Amazon maintains a dual role in the AI sector as both an investor and a partner to leading firms like OpenAI and Anthropic. Executives from these partner companies have previously advocated for slowing down development cycles to ensure thorough safety evaluations.
While Amazon is currently developing its own large language models, it does not position itself as a direct competitor to the primary products from OpenAI or Anthropic. Instead, the company focuses on providing essential computing power and infrastructure tools through Amazon Web Services.
