Amazon is reducing its workforce by 250 positions within its devices and services division. The layoffs, announced on Wednesday, October 28, primarily impact software development roles. This decision follows a separate reduction of approximately 1,000 jobs in the company's retail business earlier this month.
The company stated that these cuts are intended to improve operational efficiency and align staffing with its current product roadmap. Employees were notified of the changes via email and text messages from the human resources department. Amazon has not disclosed which specific product teams are affected by the restructuring.
These recent actions are part of a broader workforce reduction strategy that began in 2025. By early 2026, the company had already eliminated approximately 30,000 positions. The total number of job cuts reported by Amazon in October 2026 amounts to roughly 1,250 roles.
The layoffs coincide with the recent launch of several new hardware products, including Kindle e-readers, tablets, and Alexa-powered devices such as the Echo Time alarm clock and Alexa Photo Frame. Amazon continues to invest in its smart home and connected hardware ecosystem despite the staff reductions.
Investors are expected to review the company's cost strategy and financial outlook during the third-quarter earnings report, which is scheduled for release on Thursday, October 29. The company maintains that the restructuring is not linked to poor sales performance or canceled product plans.
