A user on Reddit, known as FurinaDeFontaine, reported an extortion attempt by an Airbnb host in Australia. The host, reportedly part of a large property management firm, demanded $1,700 for alleged toilet water damage after the guest checked out.
The guest suspected the claim was fraudulent because the bathroom was located above another floor that showed no signs of water leakage. To verify the origin of the evidence, the guest analyzed the provided photo using Google Gemini.
The analysis revealed the presence of a Google SynthID digital watermark, confirming that the image was generated by AI. Following this discovery, the guest contacted Airbnb support, which ruled the claim invalid and penalized the host's account.
This incident highlights the importance of documenting property conditions before checkout. Experts recommend taking photos or videos of rooms and bathrooms to provide evidence in case of disputes, while remaining cautious of digital images that may be AI-generated.
