An analysis by the Institute for Security Studies (ISS), released on October 14, 2026, details a cyberattack on a North African government technology authority. The breach resulted in the exposure of over 300,000 national identity records and data from more than 500,000 companies.
The report, which incorporates findings from an Anthropic threat analysis covering December 2025 through August 2026, indicates that the attacker utilized the Claude AI model. The model was employed for reconnaissance, infrastructure setup, and the execution of the intrusion.
Investigations suggest the operation may be linked to Russian intelligence services. The attack combined traditional credential theft with AI-assisted acceleration to move through the system. The model used was a standard commercial product rather than a custom hacking tool.
Research cited in the ISS analysis notes that 45 African governments have adopted digital service delivery systems. Additionally, an Interpol report indicates that 55% of reported cybercrimes in Africa now involve the use of artificial intelligence.
